*Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North*  *(SPLM-N)*

19 June 2017

The leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in the Nuba Mountains region issued a statement on 17th of June announcing its support for the coup led by Gen. Abdulaziz Adam Al Hilu. In response to the announcement, the legitimate leadership of SPLM-N also issued a detailed statement denouncing the coup and calling on the army and members to abide by the constitution of the Movement.

We, as the leaders of SPLM-N in other 14 regional states and abroad together with the members of the National Liberation Council (NLC) believe that it is our duty to clarify and explain our position on this issue to the Sudanese people, political forces and the international community:

1. We stand firmly against the coup d’état regardless of its leader. We                               therefore, remain committed in offering our full support and backing to the SPLM-N legitimate leadership Gen. Malik Agar Eir.

2. SPLM-N is a national movement that is opened to all Sudanese without any discrimination on the basis of race, religion or gender.

3. The decisions made by the SPLM-N Nuba Mountains Liberation Council to remove the legitimate leadership, were null and void and were against the logic of the basic organizational procedures. No Regional Council under any circumstances will have jurisdiction or power to remove the National Leadership of the Movement.

4. The vision and the political agenda of the SPLM-N do not include cessation of any part of Sudan;

5. The issue of self-determination which has been advocated by Gen. Abdulaziz Adam Alhilu and thereafter adopted by the SPLA-N in Nuba Mountains has not been debated within the Movement forums. Moreover, the Leadership of the SPLM-N has before rejected self-determination for the Nuba Mountains when it was proposed to them by Gen. Abdelaziz.  Detailed reasons for rejection, have been made public to SPLM-N constituencies, to the Sudanese people, and to the international community.

6. According the Constitution of the SPLM-N, the Nuba Mountains Liberation Council doesn’t have the powers to decide on the issues of national nature. The Council has also abandoned the principle of democracy and attempted to impose its agenda on the whole Movement, step that we could not accept.

7. Inclusion of self-determination for the Nuba Mountains in the struggle; changes the nature and purpose of the armed struggle and transforms the SPLA-N into an army fighting to divide the country. This is not the stance of the SPLM-N.

8. Supporters of those decisions bear the sole responsibility for changing the nature and purpose of the armed struggle. The leadership of the SPLM-N, and members in the rest of the states of the Sudan, are not responsible for the consequences of such dangerous decisions.

9. Transforming the armed struggle into an ethnic war dominated by a specific group isolates the SPLM-N from other forces in the country fighting for political change, as a consequent the National Congress Party (NCP) is the only beneficiary of this move.

10. We respect but do not support the decision of our comrades in the Nuba Mountains, and we affirm that despite their regrettable split from the SPLM-N, the movement, leadership and members, are determined to continue to struggle together with other forces of change in order to build a state based on equal rights and citizenship.

11. As our Leadership has confirmed before, the SPLM-N will continue to work and coordinate with its allies and other political forces to achieve the goal of the Sudanese people in political change.

The struggle continues
