Dear Prof Baraka, Dr Huda Babikir and all members,

We have received with absolute dismay, the news that Nafie A Nafie has been honoured in an international medical conference in Sudan hosted by SMSB  in partnership with Sudanese Psychiatry Association-UK  (SPA-UK) and BSAMS.

Dear Prof Baraka, Dr Huda Babikir and all members,

Dear Prof Baraka, Dr Huda Babikir and all members,

We have received with absolute dismay, the news that Nafie A Nafie has been honoured in an international medical conference in Sudan hosted by SMSB  in partnership with Sudanese Psychiatry Association-UK  (SPA-UK) and BSAMS.

We in the SDU-UK absolutely  and unreservedly condemn this action which we understand was not part of the original agreed circulated program but more so our condemnation is for the person that was included in the recognition.

From the moment the news broke out we have been in constant communication with different persons and parties (SPA-UK & BSAMS) to confirm and try to understand the nature and reasons for this unacceptable action that has taken place .

We understand that this took place without prior knowledge of the SPA-UK executive  and as such we welcome their subsequent statement of apology released by SPA-UK on this matter and accept that the SPA-UK were victims of their own success while they were supporting Psychiatry in Sudan.

We are extremely mindfully of the great risks that BSAMS and the Specialist Medical Associations in the UK are exposed to while they try to pave a route to reach and support our colleagues, trainees and patients in an extremely hostile and neglected environment in Sudan.

This episode highlights the need for stronger more stringent governance processes by or UK academic associations in their future dealings with Sudan, and while extremely regrettable, it must not divert our attention from the much needed and high profile work  that the Specialist Medical Associations-UK  play in supporting services. It is imperative that at all times we remain extra vigilant and attentive to the ulterior motives when we forge these partnerships, something that was unfortunately overlooked on this occasion.

We urge all doctors in the UK to register and join their chosen independent Specialist Medical Associations, so they can strengthen the governance processes and activities that each association may provide in the UK or Sudan.

We look forward to working close with BSAMS and ensuring stronger and more stringent governance process for the  advancement of our union.

Sincerely

Hisham
President, SDU-UK
